오픈오피스 2.4.3 과 3.1.1 의 후보 버전인 RC1 이 발표되었습니다. 이번 버전들은 각각 2.x 버전과 3.x 버전의 유지보수 버전으로 버그 수정에 중점을 둔 버전입니다. 따라서 사용상에 문제가 있으셨던 분이나 최신 버전을 사용하고 싶으신 분만 업데이트하시면 됩니다.
티맥스윈도가 드디어 발표되었다.
이와 함께 티맥스오피스, 티맥스스카우트, 그리고 티맥스 프로메일도 선보였다.
솔직히 개인적으로 기대이상이라는 느낌이다. 포샵질로 만든 프리젠테이션이나 하고 있을 줄 알았는데, 그런 강의(...)가 대부분이었다지만, 그래도 (잘 안돌아가도) 뭔가 있긴 있다라는 것을 보여줬으니 말이다.
그런데 이를 두고도 말이 많다.
오픈 소스를 가져다 썼느니 아니니.. 사실 알수 없는 일이다. 티맥스가 소스를 공개하기 전에는..
그리고 이것저것의 짜집기란 소리도 있다. 그것도 어설프기 짝이 없는..
문득 그런 생각이 들었다.
티맥스윈도가 오픈소스였다면?
1. 오픈소스의 기본 모토 중 하나가 소스의 재사용이다. 즉, 불필요한 노력을 방지하자라는 것으로, 쉽게 말해 남이 만든 소스를 그냥 가져다 쓰자라는 것이다. 물론 라이센스의 내용을 충분히 준수하면서 말이다.
2. 리눅스를 대표로 하는 오픈소스 프로그램들은 대부분 그러하듯, 하나의 통합된 프로그램보다는 여러개의 프로그램이 얽히거나 하나의 프로그램에 다양한 플러그인으로 기능을 추가하는 방식을 택하고 있다. 그렇다면 여러 개의 프로그램에서 좋은 점만 끄집어 내어 섞는 것은.. 오픈 소스계(?)에서는 추앙받을만한 일이 될 수도 있다. 이런 예의 대표적인 것은 바로 리눅스 배포판이다. 배포판이 별거 인가? 그냥 패키지 모음이다.(물론 패키지 관리를 비롯하여 전체 구조물들이 잘 맞물리며 원활하게 돌아가도록 하는 것은 실제로는 굉장히 어려운 일이다.)
3. 오픈 소스를 가져다가 돈받고 파는 건 욕먹을 짓이 아니다. RMS 파는 이를 싫어하겠지만, ESR 파인 내 생각으로는 판매자가 라이센스를 정확히 준수한다면 오히려 권장되어야할 부분이다.
이 이야기를 티맥스윈도에 적용해보자. 티맥스코어는 지금 티맥스윈도를 비롯하여, 티맥스오피스, 프로메일, 스카우트 등 전 제품에 오픈 소스를 사용한 것이 아니냐라는 의혹을 받고 있다. 특히 티맥스오피스의 경우 자체 개발이며, 오픈오피스를 사용하려다가 MS 오피스와의 호환에 문제가 있어 완전히 새로 만들었다라고 했으나, 시연 현장에서 오픈오피스 라이센스 파일이 발견되면서 오픈오피스를 기반으로 만들었음을 고백하는 헤프닝(?)이 벌어지기도 했다.
뭐 좋다.
reactos 이건, 와인이건, 아니면 뭐든 간에 오픈 소스를 가져다 쓰는 건 비난할 것이 아닌 적극 권장해야 할 것이다. 하지만 그것은 정당하고 적법한 범위내에서 그래야 한다. 만약 티맥스가 조금이라도 가져다 썼다면 그걸 당당히 밝히면서, 그 동안의 오픈소스 프로젝트들이 이루지 못한 기능 개발이나, 프로젝트간의 통합을 이루어냈음을 자랑하면 된다. 라이센스에 따라 티맥스가 개발한 부분을 공개해야 할 수도, 아닐 수도 있다. 여튼 이것은 굉장한 명성으로 남을만한 일이다. 티맥스오피스나 스카우트, 프로메일도 마찬가지다. 오픈오피스를, 썬더버드를 기반으로 해서 뭔가 개선을 했다면, 당당히 밝히고 자신들이 한 일을 공개하면 되는 것이다.
특히 수많은 사람들이 만들지 못했거나 (다른 이유로 만들어놓고) 폐기한 것들을 모아다가 어쨌든 많은 사람들이 원하는 MS 호환 운영체제를 만들었다고 하면, 지금 당장은 아닐지 몰라도 정말 티맥스가 말하는 MS 시장을 침투할 수 있는 기반을 다질 수 있을지도 모른다. 지금 현재 MS의 가장 큰 적은 오픈소스라고 말할 수 있다. 따라서 티맥스가 MS에 대항하고 싶다면 오픈소스와 함께 해야 하는게 맞을 수도 있다.
그리고 오픈소스라고 누가 그걸 못팔게 하거나 하지는 않는다. 누군가 소스를 가져다가 똑같은 걸 만들어 팔 수는 있겠지. 하지만 그건 애초에 티맥스도 마찬가지가 아니었던가?
현재 공개 소프트웨어에 준하는 라이센스를 가진 한글 맞춤법 검사기는 존재하지 않습니다. 맞춤법 검사기는 커녕 사전 데이터마저 존재하지 않습니다. 어떻게 이런 일이 있을 수 있는 것일까요?
여러 가지 이유가 있겠지만, 분명한 것은 "아무것도 없다."라는 사실입니다. 아주 기초적인 사전 데이터도 없고, 단어 리스트조차도 없습니다.

90년대 말에 KTS 형태소 분석기가 개발되었고, 그 후로 비슷한 연구들이 있었던 것 같지만, 그 이후로 발전이 되지 않아 결국 실제 사용할 수 있는 부분은 전혀 없다고 봐도 좋을 것 같습니다.
stardict 라는 오픈소스 사전 프로그램 사이트에는 몇 개의 사전데이터가 있지만, 그 라이센스를 정확히 확인할 수가 없었습니다. 짐작에는 상용 데이터를 누군가 인터넷에 올려놓았고, 그것이 이러저리 떠돌다가 누군가 GPL 에 준하는 라이센스로 다시 내놓은 것이 아닌가 싶습니다.
나라인포와 부산대학교에서 개발한 맞춤법 검사기가 있어 오픈오피스용으로 만들어 배포해주지만, 제약조건이 너무 심합니다.
다른 나라는 맞춤법 검사를 지나 문법 검사를 도입하고 있는 실정인데.. 게다가 사전 데이터가 올라오는 사이트에 가보면 정말 듣도보도 못한 언어들도 다 사전 데이터나 맞춤법 검사기가 올라오는데, 유독 한글은 없습니다.
솔직히 좀 화가 많이 났습니다. 도대체 왜 이런거야? 다들 맞춤법을 너무 잘 알아서 그런거야? 그런 것도 아니면서..
불필요한 라이센스 분쟁이 발생하는 것을 방지하기 위해 스크래치(백지)에서부터 개발을 시작하셨고, GFDL 라이센스를 가진 위키백과의 8만 여개 문서에 사용된 단어를 분석하여 기초 데이터를 만들었습니다.(여기에 도움을 주신 김진욱님께 감사의 말씀을 드립니다.)
이 데이터는 hunspell 1.2.8 이상에서만 동작합니다. 그리고 아직은 개발 초기 단계이기 때문에 부족한 점이 많습니다. 하지만 굉장히 의미있는 일이 아닐 수 없습니다. 드디어 실제 사용 가능한 맞춤법 검사기가, 그것도 정말 다양한 분야에 사용할 수 있는 공개 한글 맞춤법 검사기가 탄생한 것입니다!!!
cwryu님의 데이터를 기반으로 파이어폭스와 오픈오피스용 확장을 만들었습니다. 원본 데이터와 마찬가지로 hunspell 1.2.8 이상을 요구하며, 3중 라이센스(GPL/LGPL/MPL 중 선택 사용 가능)로 배포됩니다. (버전 0.2.4)
리눅스의 경우에는 hunspell, libhunspell 1.2.8 이상으로 업데이트한 뒤, 위 플러그인 파일을 풀어(zip 파일임) ko-KR.aff, ko-KR.dic 파일을 다음 경로로 복사해주시면 hunspell 을 지원하는 모든 프로그램에서 맞춤법 검사기능을 사용할 수 있습니다.

오픈오피스 3.1 출시가 60 여일 앞으로 다가왔습니다. 오픈오피스 개발자들은 1000 여개의 이슈(새 기능, 기능 향상, 버그 픽스 등)를 마무리하며 출시를 준비하고 있습니다.
그리기 개체에 안티 앨리어싱 적용
이번 버전에 가장 많이 요청된 기능은 안티 앨리어싱이었습니다. 왼쪽은 오픈오피스 3.0 에서의 화면이고, 오른쪽은 오픈오피스 3.1 에서의 화면입니다. 이 두 그림은 안티 앨리어싱의 효과를 대조하기 위해 확대한 그림입니다.
캘크, 드로우, 임프레스, 라이터 등 오픈오피스의 각 프로그램에서 사용되는 그리기 기본 개체(선, 원, 차트)에 안티 앨리어싱이 적용됩니다. 안티 앨리어싱은 편집과 내보내기 모드에서 지원됩니다만, 전체 화면 모드는 아직 지원되지 않습니다.
단일 드래깅
새로운 단일 드래깅 기능으로 그리기 개체가 상당히 개선되었습니다. 개체를 드래그할 경우 이전에는 형태선만 표시되었는데, 이제는 50% 반투명한 모습이 같이 표시됩니다.
라이터에 반투명한 선택 효과 추가
오픈오피스 3.0 캘크에 추가되었던 반투명한 선택 효과가 오픈오피스 3.1 에서는 라이터에도 추가되었습니다. 아래는 강조되지 않은 텍스트(위), 오픈오피스 3.0 라이터(가운데), 오픈오피스 3.1 라이터(아래)를 비교한 그림입니다.
차트 축과 레이블
캘크의 그래프에서 음수값을 갖는 경우, 항상 축을 그린 다음 바깥쪽 경계에 기준값을 표시합니다. 이는 두 개의 축이 0 값에서 교차하는 일반적인 그래프와 꽤 다른 모양입니다. 하지만 오픈오피스 3.1 에는 축과 기준값을 원하는대로 위치시킬 수 있는 옵션이 추가되었습니다.
아래 예제는 XY 산점도입니다. 왼쪽의 오픈오피스 3.0 은 안티 앨리어싱이 적용되지 않은 모습을 보여주고 있습니다.

노트에 답장하기
오픈오피스 3.0 에서 소개된 여백에 표시되는 노트를 오픈오피스 3.1 에서는 협업자들간의 토론 도구로 사용할 수 있습니다. 노트에서 특정 문자열을 강조한 다음, 답장 옵션을 선택하면, 답장에 해당 문자열이 인용으로 표시됩니다.

문법 확인
문법 확인을 위한 기반 구조가 더욱 향상되었습니다. 오픈오피스 3.0 에서는 언어도구 확장을 통해 문법이 잘못된 부분에 파란 밑줄이 그어졌습니다. 그리고 3.1 에서는 맞춤법 확인 대화상자에 문법 확인을 위한 부분이 추가되었습니다.
윗줄
윗줄은 밑줄과 비슷한 개념으로 소수, 선 구획, 고급 에너지 물리학, 논리, 전자 등에서 사용됩니다.
하이퍼링크 관리
오픈오피스에서 웹사이트 주소를 입력하면 자동으로 클릭 가능한 하이퍼링크로 변환됩니다. 이렇게 변환된 하이퍼링크를 일반 텍스트로 다시 변환시키는 방법은 세 가지가 있습니다. 실행 취소(Ctrl+Z), 기본 서식 적용(Ctrl+M), 자동 고침 기능에서 URL 인식 제거. 하지만 이는 많은 사용자들이 잘 알지 못하는 방법들입니다. 오픈오피스 3.1 에서는 문맥 메뉴(오른쪽 클릭 메뉴)에 하이퍼링크 열기, 하이퍼링크 편집, 하이퍼링크 주소 복사, 하이퍼링크 제거 등의 메뉴가 추가되어 편리하게 관련 작업을 할 수 있습니다.

슬라이드쇼 미디어 관리
이전 버전의 오픈오피스에서는 영화 파일이나 음원 파일을 슬라이드를 열어야만 재생할 수 있었습니다. 하지만 오픈오피스 3.1 임프레스에서는 사용자 정의 애니메이션 효과를 통해 미디어의 재생, 일시정지, 중지 등의 동작을 편리하게 할 수 있습니다.
정렬 기능 개선
정렬 기능에 다음 네 가지 기능이 추가되었습니다. 내용에 연결된 노트를 함께 이동, 정렬 도구 모음 버튼에 기본 행 확인 버튼, 행 헤더 정렬 안함, 안정적인 정렬. 이전 버전에서는 불안정한 정렬로 인해 특수한 상황에서 무작위 결과가 발생되기도 했습니다.
베이스의 매크로
.odb 파일에서도 매크로를 사용할 수 있게 되었습니다. 게다가 베이스 매크로는 이벤트에 연결될 수 있습니다. 그리고 네이게이션 폼과 같은 새로운 기능도 추가되었습니다.
SQL 문법 강조
SQL 은 베이스에서 기본으로 사용되는 데이터베이스입니다. 오픈오피스 3.1 의 SQL 편집기는 SQL 문법 강조 기능을 제공합니다. 이를 통해 좀 더 편리하게 SQL 을 사용할 수 있게 되었습니다.
데이터베이스 상대 경로
데이터베이스로 사용하는 스프레드시트와 dBase 파일의 경로를 .odb 파일에 상대 경로로 저장할 수 있습니다. 이 기능을 통해 다른 머신, 네트워크, 운영 체제에 있는 데이터베이스들과의 연동이 편리해졌습니다.
국제화
오픈오피스 3.1 에서는 오른쪽부터 쓰기(RTL) 기능이 개선되어 히브리어나 아랍어 등을 자국어로 사용하는 사용자들에게는 희소식이 될 것입니다. 개선된 기능 중 가장 멋진 것은 컨트롤키로 RTL 를 사용할 수 있다라는 점입니다. 그리고 도구 모음에 새 버튼이 추가되어 RTL 과 LTR 이 섞인 문서를 손쉽게 만들 수 있게 되었습니다. RTL 에 대한 설정은 차트 텍스트 요소, HTML 내보내기, 임프레스 슬라이드 보기, 페이지 미리보기 등 오픈오피스 전반에 걸쳐 적용됩니다.
버그
800 개 이상의 버그가 수정되었습니다. 주목할 만한 것은 2005년 오픈오피스 2.0 베타때 보고된 장수 버그가 수정된 점입니다. UNC 경로를 사용하는 MS 윈도 네트워크 환경에서 오픈오피스를 사용하면, 호스트이름을 엄격하게 확인하기 때문에 다음과 같이 밑줄이 들어간 호스트이름을 가진 서버의 문서는 열 수가 없었습니다. \\file_server\reports\netbios.rtf
오픈오피스 3.0 에서 소개된 오피스 네트워크도 주요 버그 중 하나였습니다. 이는 새 파일 잠금 기능이 오픈오피스 2.0, MS 오피스 등 오픈오피스 3.0 이 아닌 프로그램에서 동작하지 않는 버그로, 오픈오피스 3.1 에서 운영 시스템 수준에서의 파일 잠금 기능으로 변경되었습니다.(이 파일 잠금 시스템은 숨김 파일에 기반합니다.)

저보고 2008년의 최고 오픈 소스 프로그램을 꼽으라면, 오픈오피스 3.0, 파이어폭스 3.0, 우분투 8.04, 안드로이드, 여기에 구글 크롬, 버추얼 박스(Virtualbox), 음.. 그리고 잘 생각이 나질 않네요. 여러분이 채워주시겠습니까?
오픈오피스는 훌륭하지만 오픈오피스 임프레스는 좀 맞아야 됩니..(....) 워드, 스프레드시트의 쓸만한 성능에 비해서 임프레스는 정말이지 못 써먹겠더군요. Keynote처럼 개성이 넘치는 것도 아니고 MS 오피스 파일 호환도 워드나 스프레드 시트에 비해서 신뢰성이 너무 떨어지고.. 아무튼 좀 그렇습니다..;; 거기다 아마 3D 트랜지션도 리눅스용으로만 나오고 윈도우/맥용으로는 앞으로도 개발 계획도 없다지요?
오픈오피스는 사실 아직 갈길이 멀죠. 오랜 역사를 지니고 돈과 사람으로 바른 상용하고 비교는 아직.. ㅎㅎ

2007년에는 월 평균 1000 여 건의 이슈가 보고되었습니다. 하지만 2008년에는 2006년과 거의 비슷한 수준으로 증가하였습니다.
사실 오픈오피스에 대한 이슈 보고가 증가한다라는 것은 그다지 좋은 징조는 아닙니다. 많은 이슈는 그만큼 많은 버그 리포트가 있다는 의미이기 때문입니다. 그래서 이 이슈들을 자세히 분류해보았습니다. 보고된 12,752 건의 보고 중 결함(Defect)은 9388 건(74%), 기능 추가와 개선(Feature and Enhancements)은 1981 건(15%), 그리고 패치와 할일(patches and tasks)에 관한 이슈가 1383 건(11%)이었습니다.(통합된 패치에 대한 더 자세한 내용은 이 글에서 확인하실 수 있습니다.)

위 표를 보면 보고된 결함 중 25%와 기능 추가와 개선에 관한 보고의 52%가 아직 처리되지 않았음을 알 수 있습니다. 총 3,000 건(약 27%)이 넘는 이슈가 반영되지 않은 것입니다. 이 수가 좋은 의미인지 나쁜 의미인지 명확히 말하기 어렵습니다. 아직까지 오픈오피스와 비슷한 규모의 거대한 프로젝트를 발견할 수가 없어 비교할 대상이 없기 때문입니다. 하지만 오픈오피스 3.0.1 과 3.1 에서는 많은 향상이 있을 것입니다. 이 두 버전을 지켜봐 주십시오. 특히 오픈오피스 3.0.1 은 조만간 출시될 예정입니다.
다른 측면에서 보면 전체 이슈의 50% 이상이 해결되었고, 12%가 곧 출시될 버전에서 처리될 예정입니다. 따라서 전체 비율로 보자면 그다지 나쁜 것은 아닙니다. 하지만 아직도 이슈로 처리되기 힘든 다양한 사용자들의 환경에서 발생되는 이슈들이 존재하고 있는 것도 사실입니다.
결론
지난 해는 수많은 제품과 오픈오피스 3.0 출시로 인한 압박감이 모든 커뮤니티 팀을 바쁘게 만들어, 오픈오피스 전체 커뮤니티가 분발한 한 해였습니다. 개인적으로 확인해 본 바에 따르면 비록 코드 기여는 그 전보다 그다지 높지 않았지만, 제품들을 제때에 출시하기 위해 해야 할 일들이 많았습니다.
지난 주 Eric Bachard는 오픈오피스의 기여자 수에 대한 글을 썼고, Sun Microsystems 의 부사장인 Jim Parkinson은 Sun 이 계속 오픈오피스를 지원할 것임을 말했습니다. 그리고 2008년에는 오픈오피스 확장에 대한 기여가 시작되어 폭발적인 증가세를 이루었습니다. 확장을 이용하면 새 기능을 원하는 누구나 오픈오피스를 빌드하는 환경을 구성하지 않고도 새 기능을 추가할 수 있습니다. 덕분에 많은 사용자들과 기여자들이 확장을 만들고 사용하였습니다.
하지만 오픈오피스의 성공적인 미래를 위해 오픈오피스의 모든 프로젝트에 더 많은 사람들이 필요합니다. 일부는 사람이 부족한 것은 코드 기여뿐이라고 말하기도 합니다. 하지만 저는 모든 영역과 프로젝트(사용자 경험(User Experience), QA, L10N, 개발 및 그외 프로젝트들)에 사람들이 넘쳐나길 바랍니다.
그리하여 2009년에도 오픈오피스가 크게 성공하고 수많은 커뮤니티 회원과 사용자가 늘어나길 기대합니다.
오픈오피스 한국어 커뮤니티는 2007년에 한국어팀을 결성하여 오픈오피스 번역과 QA 등 여러 활동에 직접 참여를 하고 있습니다. 그 중에서 오픈오피스 프로그램 자체(UI+도움말) 번역에 관련된 내용을 소개하고자 합니다.
우선 오픈오피스는 그 전신인 스타오피스 시절, Sun 마이크로시스템즈에 의해 번역이 되었고, Sun 마이크로시스템즈에서 직접 관리하는 언어 중 하나로 한국어가 지정되어 Sun 마이크로시스템즈 지역화(L10n)팀에서 직접 번역 및 관리를 해왔습니다. 하지만 오픈오피스 2.4.0 부터는 오픈오피스 한국어 커뮤니티의 번역팀이 참가하여 거의 대부분의 번역을 직접 하고 있으며, 현재까지 번역률 100% 를 유지하고 있습니다.
이러한 오픈오피스 번역은 다음과 같은 과정을 통해 이루어집니다.
먼저 오픈오피스 새 개발자 버전이 발표됩니다.
이 중 언어관련 부분(사용자 인터페이스, 도움말)을 추출하여 gettext 기반인 po 파일로 변환합니다.
이를 Pootle 이라는 온라인기반 공동 번역 시스템에 업데이트합니다.
Pootle 에서 한국어 관련 부분을 다운로드 받아, 번역되지 않았거나 모호한 번역을 추출합니다.
이렇게 정리된 "번역해야 할 부분" 을 번역팀원들에게 할당합니다.
번역팀원들은 각자 맡은 부분을 지정한 일자까지 번역합니다.
최종 마감일에 취합된 번역을 정리하여 리뷰어에게 보냅니다.(현재는 Sun 마이크로시스템즈에 근무하는 전문 리뷰어에게 보냅니다.)
리뷰 내용을 검토하여 반영한 뒤, 한국어 부분 원본에 병합합니다.
최종적으로 마무리된 파일들을 Pootle 시스템에 업로드합니다.
Pootle 시스템에서 오픈오피스 고유 포맷인 sdf 로 변환하여 소스에 포함한뒤 빌드합니다.
빌드된 개발자 버전을 다운로드 받아 정상적으로 번역되었는지, 잘못된 부분은 없는지 확인합니다.
뭔가 굉장히 복잡해 보입니다만, 실제론 더 복잡합니다. ;;;
아래는 현재 오픈오피스 3.1 버전을 위한 번역을 하고 있는 작업물입니다. 아직 마감 일자가 조금 남아 있어 번역이 안된 부분도 있습니다만, 실제 어떤 파일을 가지고 작업을 하는지 보여드리기 위해 업로드 합니다.

오픈오피스 컨퍼런스(OOoCon) 2008 에 다녀왔습니다. 지난 7일에 막을 내렸으니 벌써 2주나 지나버렸네요. 이렇게 늦게 보고를 하게 되어서 죄송스런 마음이 많이 듭니다. 개인적인 여행기를 마무리 한 다음에 글을 쓰려다보니 많이 늦어지게 되었네요.
오프닝 행사에서 연설을 하고 있는 오픈오피스 커뮤니티 리더, Louis Suarez-Potts
OOoCon 2008 에서는 참 많은 이야기들이 오갔습니다. 그 중에 주목할만한 내용은 오픈오피스 3.0 에 대한 이야기와 ODF 입니다. 하지만 아무래도 가장 중요한 의의는 전 세계에 흩어져 있는 개발자들과 기여자들이 한 자리에 모여 이야기를 하고, 서로의 경험을 나누고, 토론을 할 수 있었다라는 점일 것입니다.
이번 컨퍼런스의 경우 베이징 시와 RegFlag2000, Sun Microsystems, IBM, Google 등 많은 단체와 기업의 후원으로 정말 화려하게 치뤄졌습니다. 아시아권에서 열리는 행사라 유럽이 중심이 되어 개발되고 있는 오픈오피스의 경우 참석자가 많지 않으리란 예상도 있었는데, 해외에서만 150명이 넘는 인원이 참가하였고, 그보다 더 많은 중국 커뮤니티 분들과 학생들이 참석을 했습니다.
특히 행사가 베이징 대학교에서 열려, 많은 베이징 대학교 학생들이 참석을 했습니다. 그런 까닭인지 일반인을 위한 듯한 세션도 상당수 있었습니다. 저는 주로 L10n(Localization, 지역화)와 NL (Native Language) Project 에 관심이 많아 관련 세션을 들었는데, 사실 대부분은 연례 보고에 가까운 내용들이었습니다.
가장 큰 진척을 보인 논의는 NLC 와 관련된 문서화 정리 부분이었고, 가장 흥미롭게 들은 세션은 마지막날에 진행된 Ontalogy 와 관련된 세션이었습니다. 역시 대세는 시맨틱과 온탈로지였습니다. ;;;
개인적으로 첫 해외여행이었고 첫 국제 컨퍼런스 참가였는데, 여러가지로 많은 수확이 있었던 것 같습니다. 가장 큰 수확은 제가 가장 크게 목표를 두었던, "한국어 커뮤니티도 활동하고 있다. 라는 것을 알리는 것" 과 "외국 커뮤니티 회원들과의 연대" 라는 부분에서 기대 이상의 성과를 얻었습니다.
솔직히 많은 오픈소스 분야에서 한국어 커뮤니티의 활동이 부진해 소외받기가 일쑤인데, 이는 오픈오피스에서도 마찬가지였습니다. 하지만 저와 이야기를 나눈 분들은 예의상으로나마 한국어 커뮤니티의 활동에 대해 꾸준히 언급을 해주었고, 동양권 언어 지원에 대해서도 진지한 논의가 진행되었습니다(사실 동양권 언어 지원에서도 한국어보다는 중국어, 일본어 지원이 우선시되곤 했습니다).
그리고 이번 컨퍼런스를 통해 아시아지역의 연대를 더욱 곤고히 하는 계획도 수립되었습니다. 이러한 계획에서 한국어 커뮤니티도 더이상 소외되지 않고 주도적인 역활을 하는 커뮤니티로 자리매김을 할 수 있을 것으로 보입니다.

여담으로 영어를 자연스럽게 사용하지 못해 어려움이 많았는데, 그럼에도 불구하고 정말 많은 분들과 이야기를 나누고 교류를 할 수 있었습니다. 오픈소스를 하시는 분들이라 그런가 정말 오픈된 마인드를 가지고 계셨습니다. 떠듬떠듬한 영어에도 불구하고 참 진지하게 들어주셨고, 실제로 제 의견이 반영되기도 했습니다.
화제는 주로 오픈오피스에 대한 이야기였으나 그를 넘어 국제 정세에 대한 이야기까지 참 다양한 이야기들을 나누었습니다. 유럽분들은 한반도 정세나 동북아 언어(한국어, 일본어, 중국어)에 대해 관심이 많으시더군요. 특히 컨퍼런스 행사 기간 중 미국 대통령 선거가 있어 미국 44대 대통령으로 선출된 버락 오바마에 대한 이야기도 화제 중의 하나였습니다.
